The old Nakasendo road

Explore the preserved post towns of Tsumago-juku and Magome-juku, where time seems to have stood still since the Edo period.

Day 1, Tsumago-juku: The charm of Edo-era Japan

Arrive at Tsumago-juku, a remarkably well-preserved former post office thanks to the efforts of its residents . Stroll through its narrow streets lined with dark wooden houses and discover the Wakihonjin Okuya, a former residence that once housed shogunate officials.

Stop at a local inn where you can enjoy a mountain kaiseki meal made with wild vegetables and grilled trout.

In the afternoon, take a stroll around the village or follow a small section of the Nakasendō to admire the cedar forests and clear streams.

A ryokan will complete the evening with a dinner showcasing the simple and refined flavors of the Kiso region.

Day 2, Magome-juku: Hiking Through Time

After a Japanese breakfast, set off on the Tsumago to Magome hike, an approximately 8 km trail accessible to all walkers. The path winds through bamboo forests, rice paddies and old farmhouses, and is punctuated by waterfalls such as Odaki-Medaki , and charming rest pavilions.

Take the time to breathe the fresh air and admire the mountain landscapes that change with the seasons.

Arrive in Magome-juku , another beautifully restored post town, where old inns and mills evoke the lives of travelers in Edo. Settle into a quaint cafe to enjoy a coffee or local dessert while gazing at the mountains.

Before heading back, enjoy a final soak in a local onsen or stroll among the craft shops selling lacquerware, ceramics, and cypress wood items.
