Culture and Nature
of Nagano
Set off to explore Nagano, a region where untouched landscapes meet centuries-old traditions. From majestic temples and historic villages to breathtaking alpine valleys, every day reveals a new side of authentic Japan. Savor local specialties, unwind in steaming onsen baths, and let the timeless beauty of the Shinshū mountains capture your senses.
Day 1, Nagano: Spirituality & Local Flavors
Begin your journey with a visit to the magnificent Zenko-ji Temple, one of Japan’s oldest Buddhist sites, founded in the 7th century. Stroll along Nakamise-dori, the temple’s lively main street lined with traditional shops where you can sample oyaki, Nagano’s famous stuffed buns.
For lunch, enjoy handmade Shinshū soba, a specialty for which the region is renowned. In the afternoon, tour a sake brewery such as Miyasaka Shuzo, home of the celebrated “Masumi” sake, and discover the craftsmanship behind this iconic drink.
As the day winds down, relax in your ryokan’s hot spring bath just steps from the temple, before enjoying a kaiseki dinner inspired by the region’s mountain harvests.
The Japanese have a real talent for culinary creativity. Make sure to try soba-cha ice cream, a bold, buckwheat-tea flavor that’s truly one of a kind.

Day 2, Matsumoto: Art, History, and the City’s Unique Charm
Head to Matsumoto, just an hour’s drive away, to explore the magnificent black-walled Matsumoto Castle, nicknamed “The Crow” for its striking dark façade. Continue your stroll through the historic Nakamachi district, known for its white-plastered merchant houses, before stopping by the Matsumoto City Museum of Art, home to the vibrant works of Yayoi Kusama, the city’s most celebrated native artist.
In the afternoon, wander down Nawaté Street, lined with small craft shops and retro cafés.
Spend the night in a delightful boutique hotel blending contemporary design with subtle Japanese touches. Wood takes center stage throughout the rooms and the lobby, creating a warm and refined atmosphere. Enjoy a dinner inspired by regional cuisine in the hotel’s restaurant. Ideally located near both Matsumoto Castle and the train station, it is one of the city’s most renowned addresses.

Day 3, Kamikōchi: Pure nature in the heart of the Japanese Alps
The next day takes you deep into the mountains, heading for Kamikōchi, a legendary valley set at 1,500 meters above sea level. Start with a gentle walk along the Azusa River, from Kappa-bashi Bridge to Myojin-ike, a sacred pond surrounded by pines and towering peaks. More adventurous travelers can continue on toward Mount Hotaka for breathtaking panoramic views.
For lunch, stop at one of the historic establishments tucked away in the heart of the park, where refined French-Japanese fusion cuisine is served.
In the afternoon, unwind with a final open-air bath in an onsen overlooking the mountains. Nearby, Shirahone Onsen is particularly famous for its soothing, milky-white waters.

Start your day strolling through the Miyagawa Morning Market, where local artisans sell vegetables, miso, and handmade goods. Wander through the historic district of Sanmachi Suji, lined with beautifully preserved wooden houses from the Edo period, and stop by the sake breweries scattered throughout the narrow streets.
For lunch, enjoy the region’s specialty: tender Hida beef. In the afternoon, visit the Takayama Jinja, the former administrative headquarters of the local government.
