Eastern Hokkaido, facing Russia

Hokkaido is a wild land that represents a quarter of Japan's land area but only five percent of its population. Explore the eastern part of the island, its wildest region, with its lakes and high plateaus. This excursion is perfect for hikers and nature lovers who aren't afraid of steep climbs. It's ideal when the weather is pleasant in spring or summer. In winter, we recommend our "Winter Sports in Sapporo" excursion.

We highly recommend our driver-guide service to facilitate your travels in a prefecture where rail transport is limited. This will allow you to efficiently complete the program below.

Day 1, Kushiro: arrival in Hokkaidō

Your excursion begins in Kushiro . You will arrive by plane from Tokyo the day before or the morning of your trip. Upon arrival, be captivated by the wild beauty of Kushiro Shitsugen National Park , a vast expanse of marshland that is home to unique flora and fauna. Next, depart for Lake Akan , famous for its crystal-clear waters and mysterious marimo algae. There, you will visit the Ainu village district, where you can learn about this ancient culture, indigenous to Hokkaido. Spend the night in a hotel on the lake's shores.

Day 2, Akan: nature hike

This day is dedicated to adventure and discovering the volcanic landscapes of Hokkaido. Your guide will drive you to the foot of the Mount Meakan , a majestic volcano that dominates the region. The hike, punctuated by wooded trails and spectacular panoramas, will take you to the summit, where the scenery changes dramatically: fumaroles, volcanic rocks, and breathtaking views of the surrounding lakes. In the late afternoon, return to your hotel for a relaxing soak in an onsen (hot spring).

Day 3, Abashiri: the northern peoples

Departure for Abashiri , a city steeped in history and overlooking the Sea of Okhotsk . There, you will visit the Museum of Northern Peoples, which traces the life and traditions of the communities that inhabited these icy lands. A pottery workshop awaits you afterward. Your guide will lead you through the diverse local landscapes, from lagoons and headlands to dunes. Spend the night in a lakeside resort where you will savor local seafood cuisine.

The hiking trails in Hokkaido are particularly rugged. Our advisors will meticulously plan your excursion, and your guide will be by your side to assist you throughout. We also recommend that travelers choosing this excursion be in good physical condition and have some hiking experience.

Day 4, Shiretoko: facing Russia

Departure for the Shiretoko Peninsula , a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its exceptional biodiversity. The program includes hiking in the heart of nature. Several options are available depending on the weather and unforeseen circumstances. A coastal tour and observation of Kunashiri Island , a Russian island claimed by Japan, are also offered. In the late afternoon, depart for Lake Kussharo for onsen (hot spring) and relaxation.

Day 6: The Departure

From the Kussharo Lake Hotel, your guide will take you to Kushiro from where you will return to Tokyo.

This excursion is unique due to the remoteness of the places visited. It can be easily combined with our Hokkaido excursions: wild Hokkaido, between mountains and sea , and Sapporo, the northern capital . The connection between Tokyo and Kushiro also allows this excursion to be combined with a visit to the capital, such as Tokyo and Nikko, a blend of tradition and pop culture , for a truly contrasting tour.

recommended additional services

  • Driver-Guide : To visit Hokkaido efficiently, we recommend hiring a driver-guide. This service will allow you to access more remote areas far from train stations. You can also enjoy the scenery and relax in the vehicle between excursions. Of course, organizing this trip by train is still possible, but it will involve time constraints.

  • Restaurant reservations: Hokkaido represents the countryside to the Japanese in the way a European would understand it. It's where a significant portion of the country's meat, seafood, and vegetables are produced. Add to that its abundant game, and you have the perfect recipe for making Hokkaido a culinary hotspot in Japan. Our advisors are here to help you find the best restaurants.

  • Activities and workshops: fishing. Between breathtaking landscapes, discover one of the island's most important industries and let local fishermen guide you. Our advisors will offer you a fishing workshop on one of the islands, Reibun or Rishiri, where you can enjoy the fruits of your labor. Activities of this type are subject to weather conditions and may be canceled at the last minute for safety reasons.
