Ayumi is preparing an arrival guide for Japan to help you get through all the entry formalities and facilitate your passage through customs.

From landing to immigration (approximately 20 minutes)

After a long flight, your arrival in Japan marks the beginning of your adventure! First thing to do: collect your carry-on luggage . Check that nothing has been left behind: search the pockets in front of your seat, and make sure that no accessories (glasses, charger, headphones) have slipped into the back of the seat. Then, follow the "Immigration" signs.

Passport control (approximately 20 minutes)

You have now arrived at the immigration counter. Several queues are in place:

  • “Japan Passport” for holders of a Japanese passport

  • “Visitor” for non-Japanese passengers visiting

  • “Residence Card / Resident ” for foreign residents

Waiting time depends on the airport and arrival time, but allowing approximately 20 minutes is reasonable.

The staff on board the plane probably gave you a paper form, or you can find them near the immigration area. Fill one out per person.

Not comfortable with online procedures? The form can be completed in advance on the “ Visit Japan Web website, between 10 days and 6 hours before your flight's departure. After completing this step, you will receive a QR code to present to immigration and customs officials.

You must present your paper form or the QR code on your phone, along with your passport, to immigration officials. They will take your fingerprints (both index fingers) and a photo of your face, and may ask you to remove your hat, sunglasses, and any accessories that could hinder your identification.

One stamp later: Nippon he yokoso! (*Welcome to Japan)

Collect your luggage (approximately 10 minutes)

Follow the signs for “Arrivals” or “Baggage Claim.” Locate your flight number on the screens, which will direct you to the baggage carousel. Baggage often takes time to be processed, so there's no need to rush! Even if you're the last to disembark, airport staff will place unclaimed bags near the carousel.

💡

Take advantage of going to the toilet before collecting your luggage: they are often plentiful, clean and less crowded than those at the exit of the plane.

In summary, Ayumi's advice for entering Japan with complete peace of mind:

  • Before your flight: complete your declaration on the Visit Japan website

  • If you prefer, ask the crew for an immigration form during the flight.

  • Before leaving the plane: be sure to check your seat and the overhead storage compartments so you don't forget anything

  • Prepare your documents (passport, form or QR code) while you wait in line at immigration.

  • Remember to use the restrooms before collecting your luggage : they are often less crowded.

  • In all cases, contact immigration in Japan or the Japanese embassy in your country to find out the rules that apply to you, if you find yourself in a particular situation.
